Question: Why is To Kill a Mockingbird such a great novel?

I think you've got to take into account the time in which it was written. Even though racial issues are still a big deal today, when the book was written it was ground breaking for a white man to be so publicly accepting and supportive to a black man.

It is not so great. In my opinion. It develops later but starts off really bad with the fracture part. Even I can't understand why it is so popular. The later part is okay but if the reader gets bored in the first hundred pages, he/she won't read furthur.
It was actually the story's message that was good.
I think it was famous because it was controversial. Alll controversial things are famous.

It spoke to the civil rights movement and prejudice at a time of great upheaval in the country.
